WHY:
NOLA-PS is proud to announce that it has been awarded a generous $25,000 grant from Special Olympics Louisiana Unified Champion Schools. This funding will support the 5th Annual District Fitness Challenge and the Young Athletes Program, both of which promote inclusion, understanding, and physical activity for all students, including those with and without disabilities.
The District Fitness Challenge, scheduled for Spring 2025, will honor the enduring legacy of Dr. Rosalynne B. Dennis. This initiative is designed to foster social inclusion, physical activity, and leadership skills among K-12 students with and without disabilities. The five-week challenge will feature Unified Sports competitions held at various schools across the city, where students will have the opportunity to explore different sports, learn about the importance of physical exercise, and participate in inclusive sporting events aimed at helping every student understand their full potential.
The Young Athletes Program, set to take place in Fall 2025, encourages students ages 2-7 to explore various sports, fosters teamwork, and helps them develop essential learning and social skills. Through partnerships with daycares, schools, and Head Start programs, NOLA-PS will host Young Athletes events at different locations across the city, offering young students an early introduction to inclusive sports.
In total, Special Olympics Louisiana has granted $27,000 to the district and schools in New Orleans. These funds directly support programs for students with exceptionalities and help encourage inclusive sports throughout the district. Both of these initiatives are part of the Special Olympics Louisiana Unified Champion Schools program, which aims to create systems-wide change by fostering social inclusion through intentional activities.
