Shelita Mundy-Jones

Chief Academic Officer

Shelita Mundy Jones, a New Orleans native, serves as Chief Academic Officer responsible for setting the strategic vision and direction for the instructional framework and pedagogical approach for the district’s educational and instructional programs.  She’s a dynamic leader with more than two decades of experience serving PK-12 students of New Orleans and surrounding parishes in traditional and public charter school settings.

Recognized by New Orleans CityBusiness as a Power 20 Leader in Education Honoree, Ms. Jones is known for her ability to transform schools and improve student outcomes.  Her proven track record leading sustainable turnaround efforts is a result of her ability to transfer expertise in leadership development, ensuring professional growth for instructional and support staff, coaching, and building effective teams.

In her most current role as Director of Performance and Compliance, Jones strategically contributed to an eight-point school performance gain and LDOE letter grade increase, resulting in a rise to the number one position of all open-enrollment high schools in New Orleans (2023).   She was responsible for supervising curriculum and instruction for LEAP courses, state and benchmark assessment, academic progress monitoring, strategic planning for overall LDOE school performance scoring, teacher professional learning design, special programs and compliance, school policy, human resources, Title IX coordination, and monitoring the implementation of out-sourced signature STEM programs and partnerships.

Ms. Jones has also served other school districts and charter management organizations in various capacities such as Elementary and Middle School Director of Performance and Accountability responsible for supervising school principals, budgeting, and strategic planning, school principal, PK-8 and high school assistant principal, high school dean of students, Curriculum Specialist, Guidance Counselor, and elementary and middle school ELA and Social Studies teacher.

Under her leadership as principal in Louisiana’s largest school district, school performance scores increased by 13 points in two years, student growth-to-mastery scores on statewide assessments steadily surpassed district and state averages, and ELPT scores were consistent with having the highest percentage of English Language Learners accelerating to proficiency as compared to all the district’s schools (2020).

A graduate of New Orleans Public Schools, Ms. Jones attended Southern University A&M College at Baton Rouge, received her master’s degree in education leadership from what is now the University of Holy Cross and earned a Master of Science degree in Counseling from Loyola University New Orleans.  She also graduated from the Louisiana Superintendent’s Academy in 2022.

Ms. Jones is a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.  In her spare time, she enjoys traveling, sports, and spending time with her daughter Irie and son Dana Jr.
