Our school

Dear NOLA-PS Community Members,

During this turbulent time, I hope you are all staying healthy, being safe, and falling into a steady routine. For me and my daughter, a high school senior, our routine has helped us retain a sense of normalcy in a world that feels anything but.

Each day my daughter and more than 45,000 other students in New Orleans are participating in school from afar. While the classroom may look different, coursework is continuing thanks to the herculean efforts of our teachers and schools. I want to extend my immense gratitude to all of the educators in the parish for their unwavering commitment during this challenging time.

As a district, we have been committed to supporting the whole child throughout this crisis and will remain committed through the last day of school, regardless of prolonged closure or not. I am proud to say that in collaboration with schools, we are leading the way, locally and nationally, by providing students with the technology, meals, health services and distance learning they need to grow and succeed for the remainder of this school year.

Earlier this week, our team began distributing 10,000 Chromebooks and nearly 8,000 Wi-Fi hotspots to schools, to help keep more students and teachers connected. In addition, the district is working to connect students and their families with available mental health services and is partnering with Lyft to provide free transportation to food distribution sites. Since March 16, the district and schools have helped provide approximately 421,000 meals to students and their families.

While we are working together to make the best of this current crisis, I know there are more challenges to come. As the father of a graduating senior, an educator and the Superintendent of the district, I know graduation is a pivotal moment for students, their families and the faculty that helped them grow at school. I want to assure our seniors and families that the District is working in close collaboration with our high schools to make sure eligible students are on track to graduate on time. We are also working with schools to implement guidelines recently issued by the Louisiana Department of Education in order to meet graduation goals. We look forward to celebrating each of our graduates when the time is safe to do so.

As the end of this school year draws near, I can’t help but think of the school year ahead; we are pleased to have released the main round of OneApp results for the 2020-2021 school year on time as promised on March 31st to our schools and our families. Now, OneApp Round 2 is open for K-12 families still seeking a new school who did not receive a match in the first round. Families who would like to apply to OneApp Round 2, should visit www.EnrollNOLA.org or by contacting the Enrollment Team at (877) 343-4773 and apply by May 6, 2020.

In these uncertain and difficult times, I am working to find the bright spots. For me, it is the work of our seasoned educators and the students that they are helping to grow and support. I am incredibly grateful for and proud of the work the NOLA-PS team has accomplished in coordination with schools around the district.

We are all in this together and we will get through this together.

In service,

Dr. Henderson Lewis, Jr.
