OPSB Hosts First Innovation & Stability Committee Meeting

(New Orleans – January 19, 2022) — To bring together community members, education experts, and public agencies with deep interest in the success of public education in New Orleans, the Orleans Parish School Board (OPSB) has formed the Innovation & Stability Committee (ISC). The board established this new committee meeting as a way to propose, vet, and assess propositions that improve student achievement, the student and family experience within NOLA Public Schools (NOLA-PS), or NOLA-PS organizational efficiency and effectiveness. It held its inaugural meeting on Jan. 13.

"The Innovation and stability committee is where the village will live and work to develop the ideas for programming and opportunities for the benefit of our future citizens. We want everyone with a vested interest in the success of NOLA Public Schools to come to the table, work together, and bring to bear innovative ideas to lift up our students," said OPSB Board Member & ISC Chairman Nolan Marshall. "We will connect the dots; we will stay on the same page; and we move with a sense of urgency."

Committee members will be responsible for researching and developing ideas into actionable proposals for programming. Proposals will then be evaluated on their inventiveness, rationale, need, level of impact, potential challenges, partnerships and stakeholders, implementation plan, and scalability. Accepted proposals will then be sent to OPSB for agreement and implementation.

"I think about what we can do here in terms of this innovation and stability committee. We want to make sure that by and large, those best practices that are happening in classrooms every day, the innovations that exist, that we're able to highlight them, acknowledge them, share them and do all that we can to uplift those leaders and those teachers with the support that they have," said OPSB President Ethan Ashley.

The Innovation and Stability Committee members are as follows:

Nolan Marshall, Jr. – Committee Chair

Olin G. Parker – Member

Carlos Luis Zervigon – Member

Ethan Ashley – Ex-Officio Member

This special committee may include persons outside of board members, as well as government and community organizations who have knowledge or interest in subjects being studied. The appointments to the special committee will be made by the Board or the Board President. The ISC will work to establish a schedule of when they will meet.
