NOLA-PS to Observe High School Voter Registration Week August 23rd - 27th
OPSB passed a resolution designating the week to promote civic engagement.
(New Orleans – August, 2021) —NOLA Public Schools (NOLA-PS) is proud its community of schools will be participating in High School Voter Registration Week August 23-27.
Earlier this week, the Orleans Parish School Board (OPSB) unanimously adopted a resolution to provide voter registration and voter education opportunities for NOLA-PS students. The resolution calls for educating students in the areas of civics, social studies, and the political process and partnering with organizations like the Lower 9th Ward Voter's Coalition, Links Pontchartrain, Links Crescent City, Links New Orleans, NAACP Youth Council, Urban League of Louisiana, and Young Professionals to provide voter registration opportunities to students.
"We know the fall elections are coming up, and we want to make sure our young people become lifelong voters, and we can do that by making sure we get them registered and give them an experience in high school that is like no other," said OPSB President Ethan Ashley. "I'd like to acknowledge council member Jared Brossett for starting this practice of highlighting students who are civically engaged, as he did so in 2017 in partnership with the Urban League to recognize the most civically engaged high school based on their student voter registration numbers, which KIPP won that year and, as a board, we have kept this practice of getting students registered to vote going."
"This measure falls right in line with our vision of providing all students with a high quality education that prepares them for civic, social, and economic success," said Superintendent Dr. Henderson Lewis Jr. "Through voting and volunteering in the political process, our young people can learn to use their voice to help affect change within their communities."
