(New Orleans – December 13, 2022) — Surrounded by her family and friends, the Orleans Parish School Board (OPSB) officially swore in Mrs. Leila Jacobs Eames as the newly elected Board Member for District 1. Eames served as interim board member for District 1, after school board member John Brown stepped down earlier this year. Mr. Brown resigned from the post when his daughter became a candidate during the NOLA Public Schools (NOLA-PS) superintendent search.

"I'm honored to have been elected to the District 1 seat and would like to thank the constituents of District 1 for their confidence in me. It's been a pleasure serving in the interim role, and in my new role I look forward to continuing to work with the board and the superintendent to help move NOLA Public Schools forward," said Mrs. Eames. "I plan to keep equity top of mind, work with schools to keep them safe, and ensure schools remain academically and financially sound, as well as in a state of good repair."

"On behalf of the board, I'd like to congratulate Mrs. Eames on being elected to the District 1 seat. She has been a wonderful addition to our board and we're grateful for her educational expertise, her commitment to children, and deep roots within our community. Her more than 30 years of experience within the school system in New Orleans is a real asset for our board, and you won't find a harder worker for the constituents of District 1," said OPSB President Olin Parker.

Mrs. Eames was born and raised in New Orleans and is a product of the school system in New Orleans. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Southern University in Baton Rouge with a Master's in Administration. She also earned certification in administration from Loyola University and the University of New Orleans. Mrs. Eames is a retiree of New Orleans Public Schools where she worked professionally for more than 33 years. She served as a 5th grade teacher, Title 1 Resource Teacher, Title 1 Coordinator of Instruction, and Associate Superintendent of Federal Programs, where she managed a $50 million annual budget.

Even though she is retired, Mrs. Eames serves as a member of The Pontchartrain Links Chapter where she chairs programming. Recently, Mrs. Eames also served on two non-profit boards: Eastover Property Owners Association Board and the Non-Flood Protection Management Levee Board. In addition, she served as an educational national consultant providing support and assistance to school districts working with teachers, principals, and associate superintendents.

Mrs. Eames attends St. Maria Goretti Catholic Church, and this year she traveled to Ghana on a mission trip with her Links Chapter to help distribute food and supplies.

Married to Mr. Louis Lester Eames for 51 years, she is the mother of two children and the proud grandmother of five grandchildren. Mrs. Eames enjoys traveling, reading, playing bridge, and shopping.
