NOLA-PS Kicks-Off Celebrate Safely! Mask-Up Mardi Gras Decorating Contest

Unique way for 45,000+ students to celebrate Mardi Gras & encourage them to continue to wear masks

(New Orleans – January 28, 2021) — Mardi Gras isn't completely off the table, during this pandemic! Just as our city is finding unique ways to celebrate the carnival season, so is NOLA Public Schools (NOLA-PS).

"The District is excited to host a Celebrate Safely! Mask-Up Mardi Gras Decorating Contest via social media to get our students' creativity flowing," said NOLA-PS Superintendent Dr. Henderson Lewis, Jr., "We believe this is a great, safe way to help students celebrate the season and encourage them to continue to be diligent about wearing face masks. Mardi Gras may be a little different this year, but we can still celebrate it in many different ways and help bring smiles to people's faces."

We're asking our more than 45,000 students to decorate a protective face covering, inspired by the carnival season. Once decorated, they can post a picture of themselves wearing the Mardi Gras mask, tag the District in the photos, and/or direct-message the photo(s) to enter the social media contest (NOLA Public Schools handles: Facebook @NOLAPublicSchools, Instagram @nolaps and Twitter @NOLAPSchools). NOLA-PS will then select a winner and award the student with a social media shout-out and NOLA-PS prize.

The contest runs through Monday, Feb. 8. The winner will be revealed Friday, Feb. 12 and other entries, along with the winner, will be showcased on Mardi Gras Day, Feb. 16.
