Ann. §17:81(Y) requires schools to provide age- and grade-appropriate classroom instruction to all students relative to child assault awareness and prevention, how students may report abuse or assault to the child protection toll-free hotline operated by the State Department of Children and Family Services, and where, on the school’s website, students may locate the number for the hotline.  Each public school shall post the hotline number in a prominent location on its website.

In order to comply, schools shall implement a prevention-oriented child assault program which teaches:

  2. Students in grades 3rd-12th grade, age-appropriate techniques to recognize child sexual abuse and tell a trusted adult.

  3. School personnel all about child sexual abuse.

  4. Parents and guardians the warning signs of child sexual abuse, plus needed assistance, referral or resource information to support sexually abuse children and their families.

Such instruction shall be integrated into the curriculum of an existing required course.

The School Board shall annually report to the Louisiana Department of Education information relative to child assault awareness and prevention instruction provided to its students, in accordance with rules and regulations adopted by the Louisiana Board of Elementary and Secondary Education.
