DUTIES OF BOARD MEMBERS
The members of the Orleans Parish School Board shall have authority only when acting as a School Board legally in session. The School Board shall not be bound in any way by any action or statement on the part of any individual School Board member except when such statement or action is in pursuance of specific instructions from the School Board.
No School Board member shall exercise any administrative responsibility with respect to the schools or, as an individual, command the services of any employee of the School Board.
The duties and obligations of each School Board member shall be:
To observe the laws of Louisiana and School Board policies regarding all undertakings and decisions of the School Board.
To work harmoniously with other School Board members without trying to either dominate the School Board or neglect his/her share of the work.
To recognize that a School Board member has no legal authority as an individual and that decisions can be made only as a School Board when called legally into session.
To prepare for, attend and actively participate in all regular and special School Board meetings. The Superintendent shall maintain a record of all absences.
To vote and act in the School Board meetings impartially for the good of the district;
To accept the will of the majority vote in all cases and give wholehearted support to the resulting policy;
To represent the School Board and the school system to the public in such a way as to promote both interest and support;
To take no private action that might compromise the School Board or its administration and to respect the confidentiality of privileged information.
To uphold the mandates of the Louisiana Board of Elementary and Secondary Education and to work cooperatively with the State Superintendent of Education and his/her administration.
To act ethically in all matters thereby representing the School Board and school district to the best of his/her ability.
To be knowledgeable about current educational issues through individual study and participation in appropriate programs, such as those sponsored by state and national school boards associations.
To strive for a positive working relationship with the Superintendent, respecting the Superintendent’s authority to advise the board, implement board policy, and administer the district.
To advise the Superintendent of services needed for the conduct of School Board business.
To notify the School Board and Superintendent of any problematic issues or situations affecting the well-being of the school district.
